An organization’s mission statement is an opportunity to convey in a concise and compelling way the difference the organization is aiming to make in the world. Stakeholders want to be part of making this happen and they want the organization to be remembered for this in the future.
The vision statement describes the organization in the somewhat distant future—20 to 30 years. Components of the vision statement may include: 1) How big is the reach or scope of the work? 2) What is the organization doing? What is its role? 3) What does the organization itself look like? 4) Who are the biggest partners? 5) What are the major sources of funding? It may also include major external contexts or assumptions that will influence this vision. The idea is to push the thinking out far enough that it is not tightly constrained by the current environment and capacities.
